Scout group’s drive to raise their roof

1st Apsley Scout Group is raising cash for a new roof at its hut.

A scout hut that will be celebrating its 80th birthday next year has a fundraising target to hit before celebrating the milestone.

1st Apsley Scout Group, which has more than 250 youngsters in its 10 units, needs to raise £30,000 to replace the old asbestos roof at its base in Durrants Hill Road.

Scouts have been using the hut since taking over the derelict building in 1973.

It is one of 12 scouting groups in Hemel Hempstead, providing opportunities for youngsters aged six to 14, including sailing, climbing, camping, kayaking and archery.

Group scout leader Simon Fancourt said: “We are keen to have the roof replaced in August as it will secure our long term future and allow us to concentrate on some other key projects.”

The group is well on the way with its fundraising target thanks to local support from businesses and organisations but is now having a big push to meet its target in the coming months.
