‘Read on - for we have saved our village library’

VILLAGERS say they have saved their library from closure after its former owners said they would no longer fund it.

Bucks County Council had said 14 rural libraries face closure unless community groups step forward to take over their management.

The Friends of Ivinghoe Library was formed in March after the announcement last year. The group drew up a business plan, which council bosses have now accepted.

Secretary Emma Huxley said: “There was a really strong reaction from the community. Ivinghoe doesn’t lie down and take things easily. We’re really hoping to make the change over before Christmas.”

Under the plans, the library would be renamed the Beacon Villages Community Library, and would serve neighbouring villages, including Cheddington, Edlesborough, Pitstone, and Slapton.

A full-time library manager would be kept, and longer open hours, home deliveries and a coupon scheme with businesses are all being considered.

Grants from Bucks County Council, parish councils and fundraising events would help pay for library running costs.

Volunteers will supply many of the services now provided by paid workers, Emma said.

The library’s new logo (above) is displayed for the first time on your favourite local newspaper’s website today.
