A 68-year-old man was taken to hospital after being burned on his hands and arms during a Leverstock Green loft blaze on Saturday.

Two crews from the main Hemel Hempstead 999 base in Queensway were backed up by colleagues from Garston, St Albans and Kings Langley.

A fast response vehicle from the East of England Ambulance Service arrived at about Poynders Hill fire at 1.15pm.

A paramedic assessed the 68-year-old’s injuries at the scene and later phoned for support from an ambulance, which arrived just after 2.20pm and took him to Watford General Hospital at 2.45pm.

Fire crews were called to another reported house fire in Fennycroft Road, Gadebridge, less than half an hour after the Poynders Hill alert.

Crews who attended found a rubbish store ablaze and after putting out the fire used specialist gear to ventilate a shop unit.
