DRIVERS burning the midnight oil along the M25 may have been surprised to spot a dragon illuminating the night sky.

One firm decided to see the Chinese New Year in by preparing a dragon hot air balloon for flight close to the busy motorway at Kings Langley.

The night glow - when a hot air balloon is inflated as if it is going to take off but instead of being allowed to ascend it is held down on the ground - began at midnight on Monday to celebrate the start of the Year of the Dragon.

Taller that an eight-storey building and standing higher than five elephants standing on each other’s shoulders, it has size 116 feet, a wing span of 14 metres and a 44-metre long tail.

The balloon was developed for logistics firm, Palletways, which has a depot in Kings Langley.

It was the only dragon shaped balloon to participate in a Guinness World Record attempt for the most hot air balloons to cross the English Channel in April last year.
