Cuts to library hours come into force

Opening hours at libraries will be slashed from Monday.

Under Herts County Council cutbacks the total time libraries are open is to be reduced by 30 per cent across the county.

Councillor Chris Hayward, who oversees libraries, said: “I am pleased that unlike many other local authorities, we in Hertfordshire have managed not to close a single library during these challenging economic times.”

At Hemel Hempstead Library in Combe Street, the doors will be open for 14 less hours in a week, while at Berkhamsted in Kings Road and Tring in High Street 24 hours have been knocked off the total weekly opening hours at each centre.
