Hemel Hempstead Local History and Museum Society

Location: The society meets at the Carey Baptist Church Hall, Marlowes, Hemel Hempstead.

What they do:

The society meets nine times during the year for a mixed programme of talks and films, visits to museums, stately homes and other places of historical interest. It also initiates heritage projects and offers access to an extensive library of 240 books.

Who it helps:

The society helps research, preserve and celebrate the local history of the area, and says it looks forward to the day when Hemel Hempstead can have its own local museum.

Facts:

Hemel Hempstead Local History and Museum Society was founded in 1955.

Society members include a number of published authors, including chairman Elizabeth Buteux who has penned books about the history of Hemel Hempstead, Roger and Joan Hands who have produced a book on the Box Moor Trust and Barbara Chapman who has two texts published on Leverstock Green.

The society encourages young people to pursue an interest in history and arranges events and competitions for local teenagers to take part in.

Members meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month. The next meetings are tonight (Wednesday, October 22) and Wednesday, November 26, at 8pm. New members welcome.
