Help quilters to give athletes a warm welcome
Hemel Hempstead MP backs the Quilts 4 London project.
Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning is backing a scheme to give atheletes a warm welcome to London this summer.
The politician is urging people to support the Quilts4London project, which aims to make a home-made pennant for every Olympic and Paralympic athlete.
He said: “This is an extraordinary project that started from an idea by some local quilters.
“I urge anyone who can to help them meet their target. There is still time to take part.”
The quilters have already received or been promised 11,000 pennants, but need almost 4,000 more to meet their 14,700 target on time for the Olympics, which start in July.
The project has captured the imagination of people from around the country and is part of the Cultural Olympiad – billed by the organisers as the largest celebration in history of the modern Olympic and Paralympic movements.
Irene Heathcote and Catherine Hill, both from Hemel Hempstead, formed the movement, which has spread across the globe with support from groups in Australia, New Zealand and America.
Find out how to design and send in your own pennant at www.quilts4london.org.uk
The closing date is February 15.
