A selection of the opportunities available this week through the Dacorum Volunteer Bureau.
Someone with a keen interest in the news, and helping to spread it to people who struggle with newspapers because they have a visual disability, is needed to train as one of the team of editors who puts together the Dacorum Talking Newspaper.
This home-grown charity is run by a team of around 100 volunteers.
It keeps more than 250 sight-impaired people in touch with news and events, using the Gazette’s reports and other sources to create an hour-long audio bulletin each week.
Dacorum Talking Newspaper has kept up with the latest technology during its 35 year history.
Individual ‘boom boxes’ and memory sticks have recently taken CDs, which in turn replaced audio cassettes.
This role involves choosing interesting and useful information to suit the audience from the Gazette to fill a 60 minute recording, and preparing the running order for a team of four readers which meets in Boxmoor on a Thursday evening. Once trained, you would be on duty for one week in five.
> Cruse Bereavement Care, a charity that offers free information and advice to anyone affected by the death of a loved one, needs help behind the scenes and on the front line.
Cruse needs bereavement support volunteers to offer one to one counselling in the client’s home.
The right volunteer would need to complete a 60-hour training course for which a fee is charged. Hours are to suit and ongoing training and support are provided.
> Volunteers with energy and enthusiasm are also needed to join the Cruse fundraising team. The money raised means that Cruse can offer support free of charge to people in need of help. If you have any great fundraising ideas and can spare a few hours per month, Cruse would like to hear from you.
> Donate your spare wool to a good cause. Volunteer knitters who create clothes for little ones in Africa, India and Romania urgently need donations of wool. Their hand-made creations are sent to good cause Blythswood Care, which then distributes the hats, scarves and jumpers and blankets that make a real difference to children’s lives.
