Web wiz wanted for Home Start

A choice of location as a work base is a plus for the volunteer with the know-how needed for the post as webmaster for Home Start Dacorum.

It's the organisation that does so much to support young families and is currently looking for an enthusiastic, technically-minded person to update and maintain its website.

"We would like to keep the site looking fresh by ensuring out-of-date bulletins are removed and new items added on a month by month basis," explains a Home Start spokeswoman.

The person, who is right for the post, must have experience of website maintenance and preferably website design. From time to time there will be opportunities to revamp the site.

It will be up to the new webmaster to decide whether to work from home, using his or her own computer, or use faciliities at Home Start's small office in the old town of Hemel Hempstead, which is a friendly place. A mixture of both is another option, but the new person will be a valuable addition to the lively team either way.

Qualifications are listed as: excellent IT skills; experience of working with websites; ability to give attention to detail and a 'can do' attitude.

DAD - the Dacorum Action on Disability organisation - offering support to people with physical disabilities with services including grants, information and lobbying, is looking for a treasurer who will only be required to give up about two hours a month helping the committee to manage the finances.

Committee meetings are held in Berkhamsted or Hemel Hempstead.

The treasurer, who would be competent with basic financial management, will work with the committee to ensure that those in most need receive help and prepare the cheques for approved grants.

They are not computerised at the moment, but work can be done on MS Excel. DAD assists distribution of items of equipment not available through the statutory agencies; makes grants to other local bodies that support disabled people; liaises with the borough council in the matter of better provision and access within town centres in the district, and provides an information forum.

Age Concern has some slots on the befriending and social side that it would like to fill.

Through Friendship Tea Co-ordinators, some residents of Joseph Maitland House in Marlowes, Hemel Hempstead, are interested in setting up a small friendship group to meet once a week for coffee, tea and biscuits and, most importantly, a chat.

Some help is needed, which will include washing-up afterwards and making sure everyone knows they will be expected at the session the following week.

The tea parties will be on a Wednesday or Friday, between 1.30 and 3pm, to suit the hostess.

Qualities needed are a friendly nature, good listening and chat skills.

There's also a training course associated with this and the next one is on June 11.

An Age Concern client day forum pointed to the desirability of a get-together once or twice a month for non-political, non-religious discussion time at some of the day centres, which offer older people a chance to get out of the house and socialise.

It calls for a discussion group leader.

An hour or two given would help to make this possible.

Since administration of volunteers can take up to six weeks to arrange,

short-term volunteers cannot be included.

Another service that Age Concern provides to promote the well-being of older people and enrich their lives is befriending - in which people are visited in their own homes for about an hour a week.

Volunteers share life experiences over a cup of tea or alternatively read, providing an hour or so for the pensioners to look forward to.
