Volunteering opportunities at hospice
Iain Rennie Hospice at Home is looking for volunteers to help in a number of ways, one of which has a 10-week course starting in mid-September.
Volunteer Bereavement Visitors, for whom the course is being arranged, offer 1:1 support to families or attendance at regular social support groups.
Counselling clients is not part of the role. Emphasis is on support. Good listening and communication skills are important, and volunteers must have transport. Mileage is reimbursed.
Volunteers, who have suffered bereavement or been seriously-ill, are advised to wait for at least two years before they consider becoming a bereavement visitor.
Banking and clerical assistance is needed at Iain Rennie's Tring office on Tuesday or Wednesday mornings.
Funds have to be prepared for banking and often there are large amounts of coins to take to the bank, which rules out anyone with a back problem.
Records are kept on an Excel spreadsheet that has to be updated.
Being numerate and well organised, able to pay attention to detail and work as part of a team, are relevant skills. Experience with Excel is essential.
Sewing-machine enthusiasts happy to work from home on Iain Rennie day bags, made from donated materials, are sought.
