Helping in the sports arena must be a specially enjoyable volunteering job.
Hemel Hempstead Swimming Club, for example, is set for another successful year as one of the top development clubs in the county and volunteers supporting the activity have the pleasure of seeing swimmers grow in confidence and ability, a reward in itself, says a member.
Like all sports clubs, it is primarily run by volunteers who give their time generously.
The club particularly excels in the development of young swimmers and is the only one to put three teams in the county's Junior (Peanuts) League, which means up to 90 swimmers all competing on the same night, quite a feat of organisation and dedication by coaches and parents, as well as the swimmers themselves.
It is already enjoying 2008 and looking forward to the year ahead, with the Hertfordshire county championships taking place this month.
