Help put fun into our playschemes

Hundreds of children throughout Dacorum can look forward to having somewhere where they can have lots of fun during their school holidays.

Dacorum Borough Council's playschemes also offer terrific opportunities for those with the energy to give some of their time as helpers.

Assistants to the professional play leaders are needed and times are flexible and arranged to suit volunteers.

No special qualifications are needed, but there is plenty of scope for people who have skills in music, sports, arts and crafts, drama, and so on, to contribute something extra.

One specific requirement to be a playscheme helper - aged 17 and above - is a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check, which is organised for volunteers, provided they can make a one-year commitment.

Playscheme development officer, Joanne Palmer, is looking forward to a good response from the district's many volunteers, especially for the newly-introduced Rural Play fun days, organised with the help of parish councils.

It is hoped to have the first fun days during the May half-term holiday and volunteers are needed to assist in the organisation and running of a range of sports activities and arts and crafts, said Joanne.

Hemel Hempstead has a playscheme running throughout the summer holidays at Tudor School, catering for ages five to 12.

It starts at the end of this month and runs from 8.30am to 5.30pm, but can be split into shifts.

Action Station operates for one week, in the morning, at Chipperfield, Flamstead, Markyate and Potten End.

Arts and crafts will be at Bovingdon, Long Marston, Boxmoor, Tring and

Apsley on different weekday afternoons.
