Cleaning up on the canal
It's spring clean time again for the fleet of canal boats operated by Reach Out Projects.
They provide opportunities for people to develop their potential and provide residential accommodation for a wide range of groups.
The fleet is based on the Grand Union Canal at Hemel Hempstead and at Chellington Centre in North Beds. Two of the three boats used by Reach Out are wide beamed to allow access for people with physical disabilities.
Volunteers are important for operational smooth running and efficiency, crucially in the domain of the domestic diva and in engineering matters.
Small teams of cleaners must be organised to give a narrowboat, with its 12 bunks, kitchen and two loos, a nice spruce up prior to being hired out.
It means about one to two hours' work, and although there is access any time it is better during the day and preferably arranged in pairs because the area is a bit remote.
It's a short walk from Apsley Marina, not far from Apsley Station.
Because bookings tend to be irregular, a boat gets dusty and stuffy, but that's nothing to deter a domestic diva from making it bright and sparkling for the clients.
No particular skill is required, only ability to make a thorough clean in a confined space.
Experience counts for engineers wanted as members of the team carrying out regular maintenance and pre-trip engine checks on Lister marine engines in the narrow and wide-beam boats.
They should be able to give two to four hours once or twice a month.
