Travel agent Thomas Cook is proposing to close its branch in Marlowes, Hemel Hempstead.

The town centre store, which employs two staff, has been put on the list for closure because it falls short of performance targets and there is another branch in the Marlowes Shopping Centre.

The high street branch is among 185 stores that face the axe, as part of a business turnaround plan to secure a stronger company for the future. A 90-day consultation has been launched with staff before a final decision will be made.

The news is another blow for Hemel Hempstead’s town centre, which is already losing HMV, while clothes store Republic faces an uncertain future. Thomas Cook in the shopping centre is unaffected.
