The club assembled for the last of this session's meetings on April 3 and welcomed its former Member of Parliament for South West Herts, Richard Page and his wife Madeline.

Mr Page spoke of more than 25 years in the House of Commons, during which he had served under several leaders in many capacities.

The experience had left him with mixed feelings for his political opponents - but some of whom he could allow a grudging respect.

Recalling his first entry to the House of Commons as Member for Workington, Mr Page shared with his audience the sage advice he had been given by a veteran parliamentarian. "Remember, it will take you only two weeks to gain a reputation here; but it will take you two years to lose it!"

He looked forward to what he was sure would be a Conservative victory at the next general election.

The luncheon club will reassemble in September.
