Hundreds turned out to mark the one year anniversary of the death of a popular Berkhamsted teenager who died suddenly last May.

The community was devastated when 17-year-old Nick Walsh collapsed just meters away from his home on Cowper Road, after suffering a brain haemorrhage.

In tribute to the football-mad teen the Nick Walsh Memorial Shield was set up and last Friday
around 300 friends and family turned up to cheer on Nick's team, Berkhamsted Rangers, as they beat The St George Crusaders 2-0.

Before kick-off there was a minutes applause in his honour and Nick's brother, Tom, wore his old shirt as he played.

Rangers manager Keith Bayliss said the team put in the best performance of the season.

The event raised around £1,000 for Ashlyns School's Nick Walsh Memorial fund and will be used to enhance the school's sporting facilities.

Nick's mother Julie said it is still incredibly difficult for the family, but thanked everyone for their support.

She said: "It was really lovely to see so many of his friends still remembering him. We would like to thank Keith Bayliss and Mr Dalziel for organising it."

Head teacher of Nick's school Richard Dalziel presented the trophy to the winners.

He said: "I was really thrilled to be invited and I have to say the heading on the shield said it all 'Friendship in Sport'.

"I don't think there could be a more fitting tribute to a wonderful lad like him."
