Recycling bins overflowing with leftovers from Christmas sit uncollected for the 23rd day.

The tall green bins used for recycling cardboard, left-over food and garden waste have not been emptied since December 17 and will not be until January 21.

Dacorum Borough Council, responsible for emptying the bins once every two weeks, stopped th
e service to help cope with the large amount of other waste produced across the borough over the Christmas holiday.

David Austin, waste services manager for the council, said: "The collection of refuse over Christmas is a major logistical operation for every local authority. We typically collect over three times the normal amount of waste and this collection has to be staggered to reflect the public holidays.

"We suspend the alternating weekly collection service after Christmas so grey bins can be emptied on consecutive weeks to help clear the extra non-recyclable waste (packaging, wrapping paper etc). Because there is less garden waste – there should be capacity in the green bin to store cardboard and organic waste until the next collection.

However he added: "We will be monitoring feedback from residents with regard to the suspension of the green bin service at Christmas. If residents would prefer green bin collections over this period we will develop alternative proposals for Christmas 2008."
