Former Berkhamsted mayor June Crawley has joined the campaign to save the town's Day Centre where her wheelchair-bound husband is a regular visitor.

Mrs Crawley served the community for 18 years and was mayor from 1988 to 1990. She is now sole carer for her husband Charles and says the threatened Manor Street Day Centre is vital for them and many other elderly and disabled people in the town.

However, the centre is in a temporary building which is to close and the service may be relocated to Hemel Hempstead and Tring.

This has outraged members of the group and their carers who want the facility to remain in the town.

Mrs Crawley said: "It really is important. Berkhamsted needs this service with its ageing population."

She accepted that the building has served its purpose but feels strongly that the service should not be moved out of Berkhamsted.

"When Charles is at the centre it gives me and other carers respite and I use the time to get things done such as shopping and housework," she said.

The final decision on the fate of the service will be taken by Hertfordshire County Council on Monday, February 18.

Mrs Crawley and other carers will have their chance to voice their opinion on the impending closure at a meeting at the day centre this evening (Wednesday, January 16) at 6pm.

A spokesman for the county council, Andrew Dawson, said: "We have seen a steady decline in people using the day centre in the past seven years. Manor Street is a temporary building that is really not fit for purpose."

He added that representatives from the council would be at the meeting this evening and he welcomed the public to give their thoughts by emailing dayserviceviews@hertscc. gov.uk
