CHILD
OF THE 60s
In 1962, John
Child became The Gazette's first staff photographer.
For over a
century before that The Gazette had used photographers with local businesses
(of which there were many in those days) to take any picture they wanted.
In Child of
the 60s we will be taking a look back at some of the early pictures John
took in Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted, Tring and the villages.
The pictures
were all taken on 120 black and white film |

In 1962 British
TV got a new show that took the country by storm - Z cars.
The series,
was vcentered on the fictional suburb of the Liverpool area called New
Town.
Because Hemel
Hempstead was then a developing new town, and close to the BBC TV studios
it was often used for filming outside shots in the series.
The scene
above is being shot in Bank Court in Marlowes |
Local
Scouts rehearsing their Gang Show at Christmas 1962 |
That's
all for the moment, but we will be adding new pages of John's pics throughout
2003.
If
the pictures bring back any memories do tell us about them.
