Question: I am interested in finding out some history about Boxmoor Arts Centre, and if possible, seeing some photos. I am interested to find out what it was built for and what it has been used for over the ages.
Answer:

Boxmoor Hall | Boxmoor Hall was built in 1889-90 from surplus monies from the Box Moor Trust. It was felt at the time a large public meeting place was needed to serve Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted.
The hall was built at a cost of around £1,300 and was constructed by a local builder, James Payne.
On the ground floor was a large room suitable for a variety of purposes and on the 1st floor was what was descibed as a public assembly room with stage.
The hall saw many meetings and entertainments over the years.
Early meetings about the new town were held in the hall in the late 1940s.

A public meeting inBoxmoor Hall, circa 1930 | For many years the hall also served as Hemel Hempstead magistrates court, held on a Wednesday.
In the early 1970s it became an arts centre for young people.
The clock on the front of the building was much cherished by local people.
In 1990 almost £3,000 was spent on renovation of the clock to make it 'the most accurate in the district.'
