Boxmoor Hall
Local History, Questions

Question: I am interested in finding out some history about Boxmoor Arts Centre,
and if possible, seeing some photos. I am interested to find out what it
was built for and what it has been used for over the ages.

Answer:

Boxmoor Hall
Boxmoor Hall was built in 1889-90 from surplus monies from the Box Moor Trust. It was felt at the time a large public meeting place was needed to serve Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted.

The hall was built at a cost of around £1,300 and was constructed by a local builder, James Payne.

On the ground floor was a large room suitable for a variety of purposes and on the 1st floor was what was descibed as a public assembly room with stage.

The hall saw many meetings and entertainments over the years.

Early meetings about the new town were held in the hall in the late 1940s.

For many years the hall also served as Hemel Hempstead magistrates court, held on a Wednesday.

In the early 1970s it became an arts centre for young people.

The clock on the front of the building was much cherished by local people.

In 1990 almost £3,000 was spent on renovation of the clock to make it 'the most accurate in the district.'
