Name: Laura Windsor Address: Polehanger Lane Hemel Hempstead Views: With ever increasing housing estates being built in Hemel I presume this will lead to an increasing birth rate, but to have to travel miles to give birth. My nephew was born at Watford Hospital in November 2003, I went to visit and the drive took 4 hours !!!!! it was absolute gridlock and no way of turning back, although you wouldn't be wanting to turn back if you was in labour on that day !
Name: Amy and Neil Gammon Address: Knebworth Views: I gave birth to our first baby on 3rd Oct 2006 at Hemel Birth Centre. The centre and midwives were fantastic, offering an outstanding level of care. We feel very strongly that this sort of facility should be more widely available as it is undoubtedly the way forward for natural births...the thought that we and others may not be able to use this centre for future births is a step backwards in health care and should not happen
Name: Leesa Sharkey Address: Cleves road Hemel Hempstead Views: I gave birth to my first baby at hemel birth centre, All the midwives were fantastic, professional, and always reassuring. having my own room where my husband could stay with me the whole time made my experience much more comfortable, You cannot close the birthing centre for good its something that is really needed to stay in Hemel Having a baby is an experience no mother forgets and nobody wants to travel to watford to be part of an overcrowded conveyor belt.
Name: Amie Swannell 25 Address: turners Hill, Hemel Hempstead, Views: I gave birth to my daughter on 1-9-04 at Hemel birthing unit, the unit and staff were amazing during and after the birth, I couldn't have asked for more help and support during this time.I feel very upset and annoyed that the unit has been closed and may not be re-opened, I don't feel the people who closed the unit quite realise how important it is for the women and families in Hemel Hempstead to have the birthing unit back
Name: SC Address: Grovehill Views: I have not used the birth centre myself but my first baby is due in February 2007 and I am faced with the prospect of giving birth in Watford General - a place not known for its comfort or high standards. I am terrified as I have read many horror stories. I would prefer to go somewhere with a brilliant reputation like Hemel Birth Centre that is actually near where I live.
Name: Carryl Durnell Address: Roseheath Hemel Hempstead Views: My husband and I are hoping to start a family very soon, and I'd heard such good things about the HBC - I can't believe it's another service that's being taken away from the town! My thoughts echo those of many others: Hemel is a town which is obviously expanding, witness the recent expansion of the shopping area, as well as the plans to build multitudes more housing in the area. How is it possible to justify sending all Hemel mothers to Watford or Luton to have their babies, on a journey which will undoubtedly increase the stress of both mothers and babies, especially if the traffic is bad? Please re-open the centre as soon as possible.
Name: Serena Morris Address: Grovehill Views: Watford General is NOT an option. Hemel's Birth Centre MUST stay.
Name: STEPHEN KLIMAYTYS Address: ST AGNELLS LANE Views: BOTH MY STEP CHILDREN WERE BORN AT HEMEL. DON'T LET THEM CLOSE ANOTHER BIT OF THE HOSPITAL! WE ARE A GROWING COMMUNITY AND WE NEED THE FACILITIES IT OFFERS. WATFORD IS TOO BUSY AND TOO FAR AWAY!
Name: Kathleen Lambourne Address: Claymore Grovehill Views: I gave birth to my son at Hemel birth centre july 2005 and it was such a lovely experence. Staff were so friendly seeing to mine and my partner needs. A close friend of mine gave birth at Watford and from what she has said it is a disgrace, she was left in a corrider while in labour. I had 2 midwifes and a student with me 24/7. Hemel birth centre SHOULD NOT BE CLOSED it should be expanded. It was a delight to give birth there.
Name: donna marie Address: Email supplied Views: what is going on,we have a new shopping centre to the area,we want to bring people from afar to our town and enjoy the facilities and yet we do not have a place for the mums to have their babies, what kind of town is this?
people want to move to the area and start families and yet they have to travel to w.g.h to have their new babies. im sure the people who made the decision to shut it down need the therapy.
i have had my antenatal check's at the hemel hospital and i had two of my previous birth's at the said hospital,it is comforting to know that i would go on to have them in my local hospital and not travel out of town to do it.
we cannot time when our babies come and isnt it a right to have our children in a safe andnot so far hospital than to travel in the traffic over to Watford where the chances are most could be born on the way with possible complication's.
WE FOR THE NOW AND THE FUTURE need to bring this hospital back and full maternity/birthing unit's open,
to you people who think it's cost cutting shutting it down well it might just be your daughter whose about to give birth and they have to travel out of town to have it or they might not get to the hospital,to have a town without a birthing unit is absurd,im sure many impending residents would think twice to move to this town only to know that they cant have there future children here. WAKE UP AND REALISE WE ARE IN 2006 AND WE NEED THIS HOSPITAL FOR NOW AND FOR FUTURE MUM'S.
Name: Joy Capstick Address: Stimpson Avenue Northampton Views: My last child was a home birth. It was the most rewarding experience possible. The only other place I would have considered would have been a birthing centre. Women need safe local choices in childbirth.
CLAIRE PRIOR-MCKENZIE Address: MEADWOW ROAD NASH MILLS Views: I gave birth to both of my children at hemel hempstead the staff were wonderful and the whole unit was clean and tidy. I did have a case of spotting with my second child, I had to go to watford as hemel at the time was still closed. watford was terrible. there was food on the floor blood on the floor plug sockets where broken and the door panel fell off when the door was closed. Bring back hemel birthing unit, it's the only place i trust to bring a child into this world.

I LOOKED AROUND WATFORD THEN LOOKED AROUND HBC AND IT WAS LIKE COMPARING A GROTTY B &B TO A FIVE STAR HOTEL. I WILL NOT BE HAVING ANY MORE CHILDREN AS THERE IS NO WAY I WOULD WANT TO TRAVEL TO W.GENERAL. THEY CAN BUILD ALL THESE NEW HOUSES ALL OVER HEMEL BUT WHAT ABOUT HOSPITAL SERVICES??????
Name: sarah white Address: cornerhall ave hemel hempstead Views: I wanted to use the birthing unit for the birth of my first baby but was unable to due to complications which show up when I was monitored there. I would very much like to use it for the birth of my next baby.
Name: Terry Minter Address: Grovehill, Hemel Hempstead Views: With plans to build up to 4900 new homes on green belt land in and around the Hemel Hempstead area by 2021 I find it astonishing that they are even considering closing the birth centre down. I think we are all aware that their intention is to gradually diminish away all of the services at the Hospital leaving us no option other than to go to Watford. It doesn't take Einstein to work out that with an increase in the housing population in the not so distant future we are going to need these services more than ever!
We had our first child at Hemel Hospital 5 years ago but chose to have a Home birth for our second this year. I would thoroughly recommend this to anyone as long as you are not aware of any possible complications prior to the birth.
The midwifes, yes I said midwifes (there were 3 of them) informed me that the number of home births had gone up very quickly since the closure as expectant mothers were put of with the idea of going to Watford.
Name: Joanna Murphy Address: Kings Road, St Albans, Views: For a Trust which has a publicly stated aim of increasing choice in maternity services in Hertfordshire to close a highly-regarded, ground-breaking unit such as the Hemel Birth Centre, is an absolute disgrace.
I gave birth to our son Cameron in March 2004 at Hemel Birth Centre, and was hugeley impressed by the quality of care, the peaceful surroundings and the high general standard of the unit. The prospect of having my second child at Watford is daunting to say the least: an already overcrowded unit, with regular reports of it being dirty and the quality of service low.
I am not criticizing the midwives themselves, but feel that they are being asked to work in poor conditions and they are not being given the opportunity to do their job properly. With the closure of Hemel Birth Centre, even more pressure will be put on the ABC in Watford in particular. Home births are not a realistic option for many people, and the QE2 turns away most mothers who are outside their catchment area.
I would urge the Trust to reconsider this decision in order to ensure that their maternity services continue to meet their stated aims, and the needs and wishes of the wider community.
Name: Rachelle Fletcher Address:Herons Elm Northchurch Berkhamsted Views: I feel that it is better to keep it open because although there is not a consistent flow of births, giving birth is a very complicated process and can be fatal to either mother or child or indeed both. As tax payers, I think we should be free to know that when we give birth to our children, we are going to be in good hands and the help and assistance is going to be much more personal than if we were giving birth in a room of 20 mothers-to-be. Ask any pregnant woman whether she would prefer to give birth in a ward of 20 others, or in a room with say, maybe, 5. I think we only deserve the right to give birth safely and comfortably.
Name: Michelle Tidd Address: West View Road St Albans Herts Views: I had my son at the Birthing Centre in November 2004 and have recommended the Centre to everyone as it was such a positive experience. We are very much hoping to extend our family further and had planned to use the Centre again so were devastated to hear that it had been closed.
Name: Jacqui Ellis Address: Cardy Road Boxmoor Views: I have had three children at Hemel - two in the old unit and one in the new birthing centre which was first class. I had to go to Watford and use the maternity services at different stages through each pregnancy- to be frank conditions were practically third world - dirty, ill managed and under staffed. Please listen to the voices of reason and keep this fantastic service for the local women open. If not - Thank God I am not having any more children!
Name: Mrs Deborah Jones Address: Lindlings Hemel Hempstead h Views: I have three children, two born at St Pauls, and my third child was born St Albans both hospitals were and are old and run down. When Hemel Hospital built the brand new birthing unit i was so happy for all those new mums to be, and proud that hemel had somthing so special. How did we loose it?
Hannah Farrell Address: Birkenhead, Merseyside Views: I grew up in Hemel and I am appalled at what is happening to the maternity services. Words fail me. I really feel for anyone having children in the Dacorum area now. How many babies will be born en route to Watford? How many will fail to survive if that happens, especially those born early? Giving birth in Hemel has just become a very risky business and also a rarity, because women no longer have a choice. I have 2 children, who were both high risk pregnancies. I dread to think what the outcomes might have been if they were due now, had I been living in Hemel. The authorities need to wake up and stop this closure and return a full maternity service to Hemel Hempstead, before babies and /or mums die as a result of this disgusting penny pinching.

I was absolutely appalled to have read that the birthing centre had closed (just as I was getting excited about it) and now too the hospital may also close. What are the residents of HH supposed to do for medical support and maternity care??? If this were a village then fine but this is a sizeable town which deserves to have these facilities as standard. In this day and age this should be available without question and no matter where you live. We live in an affluent part of the country and I find it digusting that the government can pick and choose who gets medical care and who doesn't, why do we bother paying our taxes?????

I even had a health care assistant stay with me while I showered after the birth. My second delivery in July 2002 at Watford Hospital was totally different. My husband & I were left alone for long periods. After the birth I was shown where the shower was and left to it, having to make my way back along the corridor afterwards and trying to remember which room my husband & baby were in! I worked as a midwife at Hemel Birth Centre, and I would still have be working there if it were not for the underhand way they used the Midwives at the Birth Centre to deal with the staffing shortages at Watford. There is not a problem with recruiting midwives to work within the Birth Centre alone, the problem is with recruiting and retaining midwives to work within the birth centre and Watford.

I have heard so many bad things about Watford and know how many mothers have mentioned to me the dread of having to go there to give birth. When we were in the HBC we experienced nothing but kindness, professionalism, cleanliness and warm hearted comments from all the staff present. It really made us all feel a lot more relaxed about thew whole situation and we were all comfortable in the knowledge that whatever happened, the midwives top prority was the expecting mother. To hear this wonderful unit is now in danger of being shut down is both shocking and unfair to anyone wishing to give birth to a child in hemel hempstead and the staff that work so hard there. How can anyone expect a mother in Labour to make it all the way to Watford from Hemel for a start I do not know!!
Name: M Parker Address: Hemel Hempstead Views: I gave birth to my second child in October 2003 at the HBC. It was a fantastic experience. I was so grateful to all the midwives who made me feel so relax before, during and after giving birth.
The centre was such a beautiful and calming place. I could honestly say labour pain wasn't that bad!! This was a hugh contrast to my first birthing experience which was horrendous so I was naturally a little apprehensive about using a birthing centre with little pain relief. However, after visiting Watford Hospital, I was really put off by the tiny room in which I would have to labour and give birth.
It was so tiny that you couldn't swing a cat. I was also put off by the long distance one would have to walk from the car park to the Maternity ward at Watford hospital. Above all, Watford Maternity unit just didn't look clean. Please re-open the HBC for future generations sake.
Name: O Daniel Views: I believe most mothers-to-be, like myself ,preffer the attention given to mothers at the birthing centres. The Mid-Wives really make it a comfortable experience and if this is taken away from us it would be a great loss to our community.
Name: Mrs. V Chapman Address: Corner Farm, Nettleden, Hemel hempstead Views: After being birthing partner for my best friend at HBC in Oct 04, I was really impressed with the level of care she was given, as well as the surroundings. This was further increased by the comparison to Watford maternity unit where we had spent a few days around a month earlier. There, the staff were obviously stressed by the large number of women they were trying to deal with, and did not keep us informed throughout my friends care. The buildings at Watford are in desperate need of repair, and the whole place was dirty. Needless to say, neither of us were particularly impressed by the news that childrens services were also to be moved there, especially as she does not drive. The Starfish ward was lovely, but again, did not compare to the care we had experienced at Hemel when her first child spent a considerable amount of time there in her first two years. When I found out I was pregnant in October, I was thrilled, and looked forward to being able to have a similar experience in HBC as my friend did, so I was devestated when the closure was heard about through the grapevine, from a lady in the queue in Littlewoods! I tried not to believe it at first, then the Gazette announced it too. I am not going to Watford, I am going to have my GP refer me to either L&D or Stoke Mandeville once I have looked around both, but obviously I would still prefer to be close to home at HBC. At least it won't take me over an hour to get to either of the

The care that Charlie, my husband and I received there was outstanding. After visiting Watford Hopsital, HBC was our clear favourite because we just felt so comfortable and reassured there.
The staff were fantastic and because I was so relaxed, Charlie came into the world very quickly in the birthing pool. The whole experience was truly wonderful and compared to friends who gave birth in various local hospitals, completely untraumatic.
I cannot believe that the cost saving of closing the unit can be justified. I would opt for a home birth with my next child if the centre was closed which must be just as expensive for the Trust. Also, births with such low intervention rates like those experienced at Hemel must save the Trust a fortune.
It makes me so sad that this decision could deny so many women and their little ones the wonderful experience that my family had at HBC. Please keep our B! irth Centre open, it really is ours, we pay for it!

It is simply ridiculous that in a town of Hemel's size women should be expected to travel to the next town to give birth - particularly when the hospital they will have to travel to - Watford General - already has an oversubscribed, bursting at the scenes maternity department with far from an exemplary position in the maternity league tables. This decision, if it goes ahead, would be a disgusting outrage and affront to the taxpayers of dacorum and a backward step completely out of step with expressed national policy.

The whole experience should be a wonderful and tranquil time. Due to budget cuts across the country this experience is being taken away from Mothers and causing unnecessary stress to the baby. When are we going to realise that we need to utilise our National insurance funds. We need to invest wisely and not demolish our great establishment known as the NHS.
We have a great health service that regardless of age colour gender or wealth you have the right to FREE treatment. We must fight for what we hold dear. A safe friendly birthing Unit. ps See you soon I am off to make a baby!!! Hopefully the unit will still be open

The environment and the staff were both fabulous last year when I had my baby girl there. The atmosphere is so relaxed, the staff were so kind and this all contributed to me having a safe, calm, enjoyable water birth. The whole thing was an amazing and positive experience it makes me, my husband and my family so sad to think that others (and indeed myself if I have another child)won't get the opportunity to experience the birth centre and it's most positive effects.

At the time we had the choice of Watford or Hemel and in the end Hemel was a clear winner. Not only was it piece of mind it offered us having a birthing centre in close proximetry but it also offered a more personal experience than the wards at Watford. It begs belief that the same commitee who originally gave the green light for it to be build only a short while ago, are now looking to pull it down as a cost saving exercise? Surely they must have budgeted for the cost implications in the first place? And if not, then maybe they should take a hard look at themselves and become more accountable for the devestation it will cause within the local comunity and hospital workers? It does make me curious as to the where the commitee members reside (near Watford?) and what personal impact it will have on them?

I hope that all the support everybody has given this persudes them not to close Hemel Maternity unit.
Name: Andy Pallett Address: Dunstable Views: My sister gave birh at this unit and could only praise it! The closure of this unit limits pregnant womens choice, creates difficulties for both mother and father who now have to travel even further and places doubt as to the governments spending and maintaining of its visions and promises to increase womens choice and fulfillment in child birth. This is not a positive step.
Name: Laura Royce Address: Luton, Beds Views: I am a student midwife in my final year of working with the trust and can't believe this successful unit could be shut down. I am fortunate enough to have had placements here and have seen what true midwifery is and should look like. Women who give birth here are empowered and trust their bodies completely. Closing the unit takes away the choice all women deserve in birthing their babies. Please reconsider this decision.

D Alleyne & K Murray Address: Catlin Street Hemel Hempstead Views: Instead of lining the Trust's chief executives pockets, keep the birthing centre open. We were booked into the brthing centre in january, but had no choice other then to change to Watford when it was closed. It is an award winning facility where investment has been made and has reaped rewards. Bearing in mind that the unit has been closed..... How ironic it is reading the annual report from 03/04 JUST CLICK HERE TO GO TO IT and seeing all the praise of the birthing unit, then reading through the senior managements salaries.

I am now 6 months pregnant with my second child and was very much hopig to repeat the positive birth experience I had there. I was the only mother to have used the birthing centre in my post natal group and my birth experience was by far the most positive of the group. I too have looked at the facilities at Watford and consider them to be far inferior to those offerd by Hemel Hempstead and am now committed to having a home birth. Reading the contributions that you have already recieved I see this is an option that many women are now considering and I too cannot see how this will cost the NHS less.

Name: Anna Spevack Address: Boxted Road Hemel Hempstead Herts Views: The closure of this resource will be a massive loss to all families. How can anyone plan and feel relaxed about the prospect of a new family when support is not there within the town you work and live in. Having to have to travel to areas outside residence is disgraceful and very unsupportive of the local government.
Name: Serena Casey Views: I have experiences of both Hemel birthing unit and Watford delivery suite and I would like to add my support to the move to keep the Hemel birthing unit open. I have no complaints about the treatment I received whilst at Watford, but the facilities in Hemel are excellent and the staff are able to provide a one to one service. It would be a disgrace for Hemel birthing Unit to be shut down. How can they possibly say they cannot afford to keep it open and then plan to build a multi-million pound hospital in Hatfield???
Name: Dominic Murphy Address: Berkhamsted Views: I unreservedly support the campaign to keep HBC open. Having read the comments from those supporting the closure, I am amazed that they can be so short sighted. The money saved from the closure of HBC will not mean more money for Watford, it will mean the Trust can save that money!
Myself and partner visited a number of hospitals when deciding where our first child should be born. Hemel was by far the most professional, relaxing, civilised and well run unit.
Watford staff were lovely and they clearly are amoungst the most hard working in the area, but the facilities are old, tatty and appeared unhygenic.
I was further amazed by the fact you can be restricted to 2 hours in a birth pool!
Every other midwife I have mentioned this to, without exception, has been amazed by this! As hard working contributers to the national Health Service (as are all those that pay national insurance) it is right to expect the best care possible, and HBC was that Gold standard. Instead of closing it and having everyone use the 'normal' level of care at Watford and Stoke, why not make others conform to the excellent services at HBC!
A saving of less than half a million pounds will not go any way to solving the appauling financial practices which have led to the trust being in debt. I am sure the staff at watford will continue providing the best care possible in their overworked state, but what of those of use who have been let down by the PCT and are not prepared to accept the production line that is Watford? We have never officially been told of the closure of HBC and were left to find another location to have our baby, due any day.
Thankfully, Edgeware are less short sighted and have rescused us.............Hemel would still have been our first choice! Keep it open for sake of all unborn children and their mothers who deserve treatment that makes the experience a fantastic one for all involved.
Name: kirstie humphrey Address: washington avenue, hemel hempstead Views: In February 2004, I gave birth to my second child at Hemel Birthing Unit. It was a lovely relaxed atmosphere with friendly staff and excellent facilities. If I had to have gone to Watford, my labour was so quick, we can only imagine that he would have been born on the hard shoulder of the M1. Please do not close the unit. Hemel needs a maternity unit
Name: Tamara Shatar and Tom Bishop Address: Harpenden c Views: We are appalled to hear that HBC may be closing. Our first child was born there last November. We had a fantastic experience, which we attribute to the relaxed, stress-free environment, clean and spacious facilities and their great staff. We don't think that closing the birth centre will save money in the long term. We believe that the atmosphere and support at HBC helped us have a fast, drug-free, natural delivery and I was happily discharged hours after giving birth, rather than occupying a hospital bed for an extended period. We would have seriously considered a home birth rather than going to Watford - not least because of the distance I would have had to travel while in labour. We've only ever heard rave reviews from other women who've given birth there and from midwives and HBC has won at least one award in the relatively short time it has been open. Closing HBC would be a very short-sighted move.
Name: H Brown Address: Hemel Hempstead Views: As reported on the hemelonline web site, proposals have been put forward to build up to an extra 6,000 homes on green belt land between Hemel Hempstead and the M1.
So our town is expanding, but our services are being cut. Can anyone see the sense in this?
It is not fair on the people of Hemel Hempstead to close services that are on their doorstep and make them travel, and it is equally unfair to the people of Watford to make them share their already very stretched services, putting the residents of both areas at risk.
I am expecting my first baby this year and had expressed the wish to have the delivery at Hemels Birthing unit. Due to the pressure of numbers of people heading to Watford now, I am very concerned that I can see myself and many other women in labour pressured into medical intervention as opposed to a relaxed natural birth, because there is a queue of women waiting for the room!
I do not wish to be put in this situation, and neither would I want to be one of the women left waiting in the corridor for a room to become free in an overcrowded maternity/delivery ward!
There have been stories reported of tragedys and mistakes related to births at Watford, due to the pressures that the staff are under. Other people have commented that perhaps only when there have been a number of tragedys will the ‘powers that be' take notice.
I for one do not want to have to risk the safety or life of my baby purely in order to make a point that the decision to move Hemels Birthing Unit to Watford was clearly a wrong decision – I will not play with my babys life, and the Trust shouldn't either!
Name: Samantha Dockray Address: Bennetts End Hemel Hempstead Views: PLEASE DON'T CLOSE Hemel Hempstead Birthing Unit. When I was pregnant with my 3rd child, 3 years ago, the maternity ward at Hemel had closed, this was to make way for the new birthing unit. The birthing unit was not ready, which meant that I had to go to Watford, once I explained to my midwife that I was not happy to go to Watford, she suggested a home birth. I decided to have a home birth and for us all went well, but it was scary been at home and knowing that there was no medical experts to hand if anything was to have gone wrong, I would of prefered to be in hospital. No one should be put in the position where they feel like the only option for them, is to have a home birth because they don't want the worry or stress of travelling 20-30 mins (depending on traffic) to get to watford in time. Home birth isn't an option for every mum to be, it depends on how well the pregnancy is going and how well there past births went, which means that some mums to be wouldn't even get a choice, it would be Watford or nothing. What was the point in closing a normal maternity ward - to replace it wath a high tech birthing unit which has all the modern facilities - to then go and close it less than 3 years after.
Name: mrs deborah edwards Address: chambersbury lane, leverstock green, hemel hempstead Views: Having experienced both Hemel birthing unit and Watford delivery suite, I wholeheartedly support the move to keep the unit in Hemel open.
Whilst the staff in Watford were nice enough they simply, because of the size of the area they serve, did not have chance to spend any real time with you, let alone explain anything.
I also found watford dirty, cramped and uncomfortable, and as there were no beds available in the ward I spent my time on the delivery suite. By contrast the facilities in Hemel are excellent. Good sized en-suite rooms, birthing pool, relaxation room, and all extremely clean and well cared for. The staff took great pride in the care that they provided. they had time for us and explained everything clearly.
Furthermore I saw my own midwife who i had come to know extremely well, and made me feel more at ease and allowed for continuty of care before, during and after the birth. It was not until i was 40 week pregnant that i found out purely by chance that the birthing unit was closed.
I have still not recieved a letter or phone call. My midwife suggested that i try for a home birth, and it proved to be a fantstic decision. the midwiferey care i recived was outstanding and i had a very positive birth experience. It is hard for local people to understand why, when Hemel is a large and growing community that our health care should be cut back.
The goverment is currently promoting choice in both healthcare and education and yet that choice is being erroded. the healthcare trust is promoting continuity of care - how can that possibly happen when women have to travel so far to give birth?
There has been massive investment of our money into health care and yet the service we are recieving in Hemel is worsening not improving! With other hopsitals in the area also considering scaling down the provision of maternity care the pressure on hospitals like Watford is only going to increase, and therefore logic would suggest quality of care will only decrease.
Yet again tonight Watford has been featured on the local news in a less than favourable light.
As a local Mum I feel that we need and have every right to expect the best in healthcare and moving maternity services, amongst other things, to watford general hospital does not provide us with a suitable level of care. I can only advise other mums to be that they consider a home birth - though presumably if too many women choose this option it will become too costly and not represent 'the most efficient use of funds'!

This was my first child and everything about my birth experience will stay with me always. The staff were absolutely amazing making everything as special for my partner and i as possible. You couldn't ask for a cleaner, or a more comfortable room! I am so shocked that they would want to close down such a well run and succesful place. If this closes i will most definately opt for a home birth rather than go to Watford hospital. I am utterly disappointed that i may not get to have my future children at Hemel Birth Centre.

Name: Mrs Reveley b_ Address: Charles Sreet Boxmoor Views: I was very pleased to be booked into the Birth Centre at Hemel Hempstead just before Christmas. I was ill throughout my pregnancy, but had looked around the Centre and was looking forward to benefitting from the facilities; and it made sense, with another child to be looked after, to go to the hospital within sight of my home. When I saw my midwife after Christmas, she asked if I knew that the Centre was closed.
I did not. She said that she did not know when it was reopening. She told me that I should receive a letter and telephone call. I never received either. I was approximately 37 weeks pregnant. I was told that when I went into labour, I should ring the Hemel BIrth Centre to find out where I should go. I was told that if Hemel was still shut, then the call would be diverted to Watford and I should go there. I think it is ridiculous for a woman in late pregnancy and then actually in labour not to know until she is due to leave home where she will be going. We were unable to find out any further information, since the staff at Watford Hospital who received calls diverted from Hemel did not know what was happening either.
We were left with very little time to plan the trip to Watford and it was hard not to become even more anxious about the forthcoming birth. In the event, my child was born in the Watford Birthing Centre. The birth was very quick, and should there be a next time, I would not be able to get over there in time - even if it the roads were quiet. The facilities at Hemel Hempstead are too good to go to waste. I also think it appalling that a mother has to be in labour before she knows shere her baby will be born, and to have no choice in the matter. I feel very badly served by my Health Service in this respect and find this unacceptable.

At least the Conservatives would openly privatise rather than trick us all into it. I was hoping to give birth to my next child due in June at the Birth Centre too. Sadly, this is now looking unlikely. I had my daughter at Watford in 2003, the wards there were extremely busy, the toilets were dirty and the staff were overstretched. With alternatives like the Hemel Birth Centre being potentially taken away the conditions at Watford are surely going to deteriorate. The prospect of returning to the 'production line' at Watford is not one that I relish. Please reconsider and re-open the Hemel Birth Centre.
Name:Katy Cawkwell Address:Aldbury, Tring Views: I am due to give birth for the first time in July 2006 and am currently registered for hemel birth centre. I am extremely anxious that it may not re-open in time (or indeed, at all). As I have a currently low-risk pregnancy, it seemed by far the best option for me, as I feel very uncomfortable in a hospital atmosphere and this offered a more welcoming, home-like environment. I also very much liked the idea of the midwife that I'm seeing now being present at the birth. Watford will be much less convenient, more intimidating and, from what I've heard, risks being overcrowded. Please reconsider, and, from a selfish point of view, as quickly as you can.

Views: We were very fortunate to be able to have our first child in July 2005 at Hemel Birth Centre. We couldn't have wished for better care or a more natural, relaxing experience.
The centre was immaculate and deserves its accolades. Why would a health authority shut down such a 'jewel in their crown'? Why would they spend so much money on a centre, only to shut it down a few years later?
Do they not forsee the pressure this will put on the L&D and Watford General Hospitals which are already struggling?
Do they not realise that people like us will opt for home births next time (if HBC is shut) and this will cost them more money? It's one of two things; a chronic lack of foresight or a slap-dash, uncaring approach to OUR health services. PLEASE reconsider because the closure of this fantastic and MUCH treasured unit will have little effect on these reported debts.

i went to the birth centre for the birth of my son in july 04 but was transferred to watford hospital because my labour was not progressing.
i was totally planning, even looking forward to going to hemel with my next pregnancy, this time determined to remember to go into the chill out room! the fact that the centre is closing fills me with uncertainty and dread, as i applaud the birth centre and its' philosophy.
i am at a loss now of where to go in the future and i worry becuase i won't feel at ease in hospital so i will be more likely to have medical interventions, quite likely leading to a caesarian. the birth centre has a birthing pool and was planning to get another when i was there. i know that the l&d hospital has a birthing pool but they don't have enough staff for it to be used.
i cannot imagine going to the l&d and starting my labour in a ward with lots of other people around, before being transferred downstairs into a dingy room with a bed to give birth to my child. i now have the options of either going to a local hospital or staying at home (which would surely cost the nhs more money?) and i don't feel comfortable with either. i read a comment about the nhs management not being fully committed to keeping the birth centre running.
i cannot believe this sentiment would have been shared with the staff and midwives at the centre. any midwife would know the value of the birth centre environment and derive pleasure from the natural births taking place there.

The new facilities were spotless and a relaxed atmosphere had been created. We looked around Watford General prior to the birth and were amazed how busy it was compared to Hemel.
A Home from Home atmosphere at Hemel made the birth so much more relaxed than the flat out busy Watford main ward would have been. By closing Hemel Hempstead the pressure on the facilities and staff at Watford is likely to increase.
My wife worked for the Estates Department that created the birth centre in 2003 and both of us are angry at the lack of thinking, foresight and wastage of money that results in closing something two years after it opened.
Other mums who my wife knows, who gave birth at Watford have all said that the staff at Watford were too busy and did not receive the same level of wonderful attention that my wife did. An important consideration in all this is choice.
We ! were able to choose how we could bring our baby into the world, by removing this wonderful facility the choice is gone and the Health services in Herfordshire are poorer for it.

I for one would never use Watford Hospital I would rather travel to Stoke Manderville. The traffic for one thing is terrible especially arounf holiday times and when Watford are playing at home. I have had dealing with Watford and I don't feel that they have the staffing levels to cope with Hemel hospitals patients and definately don't have the necessary bed space or even for that matter space in the A&E it is the most depressing place I have ever had to wait in!
The birthing centre was meant to help the young people of Hemel Hempstead maybe the Health Secretary maybe would have second thoughts if her son or daughter lived in Hemel and about to start a family. Hemel is meant to be a growing New Town what signals does closing parts of the hospital give to people who are thinking of moving to Hemel, not a very positive one.
We hear in the papers that planning permission has just been granted for even more houses, which I agree are a necessitity. So should our hosital be getter bigger and better not parts being closed left right and centre.
On a slightly different matter thank-goodness that nobody was seriousley hurt in the Buncefield Incident, but if that had happenend on a Monday morning would Watford have been able to cope, and how many patients wouldn't have made the trip to Watford alive?

The relaxed, clean and comfortable environment, I am sure, has contributed to the good nature of my baby and my swift recovery after birth.
Like many others, due to my little girl being low birth weight when she was born, we were transferred to Watford for checks, where the whole experience was marred by an extremely unpleasant catalogue of problems from dirty wards and toilets and overheated rooms to contradictory advice, long waits and general confusion amongst the staff.
The closure of such units is an utter disgrace: with numbers of elective caesarian sections and epidurals causing concern we should be encouraging more women to go down the natural birth route, not cutting off their access to it.
Like others here, when I have my next child, should Hemel not be available I will certainly be having a home birth, the irony of which being that it will probably cost more in individual care than it would had I been at Hemel.....

Exactly the sort of atmosphere i would have liked to bring my baby into the world. Watford was the complete opposite. It was not clean (sanitary bins over flowing in the toilet,no loo rolls among other things).
The whole set up was very impersonal - the staff were always in a hurry and everything was very disorganised. I must stress however that the staff there did try, however they were just too busy to give the one to one care ofered at hemel.
It seems wholey pointless to subject the staff at watford and parents to a stressful, impersonal and inefficient environment by adding to their work loads.
Hemel is a large town and all women and their families deserve a first rate local service. And local should be the operative phrase. The idea going into labour at 2.30 on a saturday afternoon in October makes the whole idea of easy access to watford ill considered. Our local health Trust has a primary obligation of health and service to the local community.
The closure proposal on the Hemel birthing unit demonstrates that the trusts first concern is to their funding - not to the parents and babies of Hemel

I am incredibly interested in the history of Hemel, and when you look back at what we had years ago I feel we are going backward rather than forward. How would the powers that be feel if this was happening to them in their town. Can you tell me how Watford Hospital is going to cope. I had my first in Watford, the staff were fantastic, but there wasn't enough to cope with the demand. I am now considering a home birth as I do not want to have to go there again as it is such a trek for everyone to get to to visit. We are expanding Hemel with so many houses/apartments etc trying to bring people into the town. Why would anyone want to move here when there is going to be no hospital - one of the main things that a town needs. So we have a large Debenhams - great - but I would rather have a hospital! I had planned to use the Alexandra Birthing centre at Watford rather than Hemel, because it is closer to the delivery suite at Watford should there be any complications (the Alexandra Birthing centre in Watford is in the same building as the delivery suite).
I may be a lone voice but my experience at Watford was a very good one. I was treated very well, and had the amount of care I expected. I never made it to the birthing centre at Watford due to early complications, and went straight to the delivery suite and then onto a ward.
I had bath demonstrations and breast feeding demonstrations after the birth, and overall have no negative feedback.
HOWEVER , I still firmly believe that we should not lose the Birthing Centre facility in Hemel. This is just another cut to our hospital facilities and Hemel hospital covers a big enough area to warrant it's own hospital and to give future parents an option closer to home.
It only takes for Watford FC to be playing at home, or for it to be rush hour, to make getting to Watford hospital difficult for anyone living outside Watford - and then there can be issues with parking.
Also, losing the Hemel Birthing centre will surely lead to an 'over crowding' of maternity services at Watford, and maybe my second experience at Watford hospital (next baby due in June 2006) will not be as good as the first.

I had to be induced on the Labour Ward and not on the Normal Ward. Well the Labour Ward was SO BUSY at Watford that I had to wait three days on the Normal Ward in order to get a snipets of time on the Labour Ward to be given the drug to get into labour. I can honestly say they were three days of hell. This is before they closed Hemel Hempstead - so what is going to happen when the whole of Hemel, Berkhamsted, etc, have to go to Watford as well???
My whole birthing experience was a nightmare, mainly due to the fact that Watford is already too busy to cope with demand.

However, if Hemel was to re-open then ther would be no question of where I would have my future children delivered. I can't understand why so many houses are being built in Hemel and yet soon there is going to be no local hospital for all these residents to go to. I find this very sad as I had a very positive experience giving birth to my now 16 month old daughter, Amy Rose. I chose to have a water birth and the care that I received both during and after the birth was outstanding. If I were to have another baby, I imagine I would have to go to Watford, which is quite a trek from Berkhamsted. Winning the FIRST PRIZE NCT UK BEST BIRTHING ENVIRONMENT AWARD in 2005 was a reflection of the dedication that we as a Midwifery Team aim to provide to all users of the service.
I am devastated that a service that has proved popular, and works, can be discarded regardless of the needs and wishes of Dacorum residents.
Why are we as a county removing an excellent award winning Birthing Centre so that everyone can have a equal lesser service instead of aiming to provide a first class service to all?
With the planned population increase for Dacorum why are we loosing all of our hospital services? Who will want to move to a town with no medical servi! ces? New homes will stand unsold and the town will suffer if we don't recognise that we need local services for local people.

I also knew I wanted a water birth and I was very likely to be able to use the lovely pool at Hemel(the pool at Stoke was out of action for weeks). Although I was eventually transferred to Watford mid-labour, the care I received during the first few hours and the home-from-home environment made a huge difference to my mental state during a long slow labour.

I'm appalled to add that we only became aware of the closure from the front page of the local paper. There has been no official statement made with even our GP and midwife unable to advise on the situation. This is just one of many public facilities to have closed over the last few years, in which time the town has rapidly expanded. My sincere hope is that my 2 year old grandson, who lives in Dacorum, doesn't ever need medical attention at a hospital on a football match day.
It is my honest opinion that the value of the land, once sold by West Herts Health Authority, is of greater importance than the people living in Dacorum
Name: Emma Bryan Address: Longfield Road Tring Views: To close and keep this unit closed is absurd.
Watford is actually quite a distance for many of the Mother's-to-be who wouldordinarily use Hemel's clinic. I am sure there will be a good many babies who will not be able to wait to get to Watford and wll have to be delivered in un-sterile conditions with no help or assistance. Whilst, before labour, one canpencil a baby as low risk we are all too aware of how suddenly this can change and how medical attention can become priority.
The extra distance many women will have to travel to get to Watford can only be a negative, stressful and in some cases too timely a trip. It saddens me that this is a consideration, let alone a possible reality. Let's hope that all future babies know to hold on in there until they arrive (eventually) at Watford...and let's hope that Watford will have the capacity and room in their hospital to deal with them!!!!

Watford can not cope with what they have got, they cover such a vast area already. The thought of having a super hospital built in Hatfield is laughable (however, we won't be laughing if we alow this to happen).

Where is the sense, the NHS must have spent alot of money opening it and now all that is being thrown down the drain, if this is the general trend no wonder there's a cash crisis!
Well from someone who has always been nervous to say the least at the thought of giving birth, but significantly conforted by being lucky enough to have the Hemel facility on her doorstep, I am now once again deeply concerned about my options and the half hour drive (or more in the morning / evening / weekend rush) to get to an overcrowded hospital.

It is how all births should be. The community teams who support the birth unit were wonderful with my community midwife attending the last half hour of labour. Afterwards, I was very well cared for and offered the option of staying overnight which was peaceful and very restful. The Hemel birth unit is how all maternity services should operate, 'normal' births supported by midwives who have time for you. It would be terrible if Hemel looses this service. With good promotion the unit can encourage more births (it has already exceeded the number it was supposed to do.) PLEASE DO NOT LET THIS SERVICE GO, Watford hospital is already overstretched.

After my visit to look at Watford maternity unit I was left feeling anxious after a stressful drive, not being able to find it or park anywhere, almost fainting with the heat as it was mid summer and I knew then I would find it very hard to achieve a natural enjoyable birth here.
The birth centre is one of the best things Hemel has going for it and with its current bid to revive itself as a great place to live the closure of this unit is a great loss.
I think the gift of bringing a child into the world is a moment which should be as happy and as relaxed as possible and natural births should be encouraged as much as possible for the happiness and health of both baby and mother
Name: Shelley Archibald Address: 81 Weymouth Street Hemel Hempstead Views: I had a baby last Summer and chose to give birth at the Hemel Birthing Centre - at that time it had just won the prestigious NCT Award for best birthing centre in the UK, for obvious reasons.
In the event I had no choice and had to go to Watford for induction. In the first instance I can't believe that the whole maternity unit in Hemel was closed anyway but to close the Birthing Unit also is just outrageous!
I remember there being two Hospitals in Hemel when I was a child - I was born at St Pauls (closed and now a housing development - bringing in more people to the town.....no more schools, hospitals and services no....let's put more houses there!).
Not only were there the two hospitals in Hemel but there was a Maternity Unit at St Albans (oh yes that's also closed). Imagine the catchment area that Watford now services - yes it's huge.
When I was in the maternity unit at Watford it was hugely busy and I had to wait a day and a half to be induced as there was never any room in the Labour Suite - not only that I had to wait at least six hours to be seen by a Dr in the first place!
There are going to be fatalaties as a result of this closure and the incompetence of the whole Health Authority as indeed I believe there already have been in the Maternity Unit at Watford.
Not only that, now as a result of the Children's Ward at Hemel only having a day unit my friend's 4 year old daughter has had to endure journeys to 3 hospitals in order to be treated - I think she was lucky to get to Hemel hospital in time before the A&E was closed!

Trying to get there in that when I'm in labour is a horrible idea. Hemel is meant to be a growing town, and yet they the goverment are taking away more and more of our services all the time. Various Clinics/units/wards at the hospital are closing and yet the population of the town is growing! I am not keen to give Birth at home, as I'm worried in case anything goes wrong..and then again having to be blue lighted to watford is not my idea of fun. So does this mean everyone will get a nice lump off their Council Tax for another reduced service ?? I think not. We are looking forward to recieving the £ 250.00 for a trust fund for our child, would this money not have been better spent providing the service in the first place ??
Given the choice I would say 90% would agree with me. I don't think it's hard to balance the books. Either the Government have not allowed enough money for the hospital to run, or the Trust is not capable of managing their budgets. If the trust is at fault why are the senior members of the board still employed, If the government are at fault, how long does it take to listen to the people they are representing.
Dave Gemal Address: Manan Close Hemel Hempstead Views: Our daughter was born on 28.02.2004 , the staff were excellent and the facilities impeccable.
From my wife's and daughter's care and my own (constant sandwiches and tea throughout)as well as a private room in an NHS hospital! I , personally, have heard many an unkind said word about the facilities at Watford (overcrowding and general complaints) and if we are to have more children and Hemel is not available then I fear that I will insist on private care , which is a pity as the birthing center is relatively new and according to the comments posted on this web-site and in the baby birth books there is only high praise for the unit.
It always seems to boil down to budget , I feel that myself and the citizens of Hemel pay our taxes and we should have our own hospital and birthing center as the town is growing and we shouldn't have to drive / commute to an already overcrowded hospital in Watford that is struggling to cope with it's own town population

Email supplied Over the years, I have moved around a great deal with my job. For the past ten years, however, I have lived in Hemel Hempstead which I found to be a clean, safe and well-supplied town. My two children, aged 9 and 7, were both born in the Hemel Hempstead Birthing Unit. We are expecting our third child and had been looking forward to him/her being born at the Hemel Hempstead Birthing Unit at the end of April. We both find this news devastating and quite incredible. Reading the article on the front page of the Herald Express was every bit as much of a shock as we all experienced at 6am on Sunday 11 December 2005. Please do everything you can to help to get this dreadful decision reversed.
Name: Andrea Upex Address: email supplied Views: I gave birth to our daughter at HBC in August 2005. It was a wonderful experience - calm, peaceful and not at all what I expected. . Giving birth particularly for the first time is a worry for all but having such marvellous facilities on our doorstep certainly helped allay my fears.
Other women I met who choose to give birth at Watford were greated by insufficient beds amongst other issues. Giving birth should not be a production line! By closing the unit I believe that women are being deprived of choice as well as risking lives. As Hemel expands how will Watford be able to cope?
I am very concerned - I want another baby I am not prepared
Name: Barbara Wooding Address: Belsize Road, Hemel hempstead Views: OUR BIRTHING UNIT IS USED NOT ONLY BY MOTHERS TO BE LIVING IN HEMEL, BUT ALL THE SURROUNDING SMALLER TOWNS AND VILLAGES. JUST WHAT ARE THEY SUPPOSED TO DO - TAKE A BUS TO WATFORD?? NOT EVERYONE HAS CARS OR CAN DRIVE! IT IS DISGRACEFUL AND I URGE ALL CONCERNED TO THINK AGAIN AND FIND ANOTHER WAY TO SAVE MONEY. HOW ABOUT GETTING RID OF ALL THE MANAGERS AND HANGERS-ON.....THAT WILL SAVE LOTS OF MONEY!
Name: Claire Mower Address: Lovel Close, Hemel Hempstead Views: I feel fortunate to have been able to give birth at my local hospital, before the maternity unit closed. I shudder to think how needlessly unpleasant the journey to Watford when in labour might have been, particularly on a Saturday afternoon on the run-up to Christmas with a home match playing.
As it was, we had a three-minute journey in the car to West Herts - bad enough, actually - but soon over. It doesn't take much to foresee the headlines after the inevitable tragedy of a lost life, due to over-crowding, delayed journey etc.. 9 years ago, when my 1st child was born, there were increased numbers expected and I remember the midwives' concern about the numbers due in then. Although they joked about installing bunkbeds in the delivery rooms, there was nonetheless real concern.
How can they therefore justify closing a unit that has always run to capacity? Hemel is a large town with thriving numbers. We need a hospital to match.
Name: Emily Davies Address: nash mills hemel hempstead Views: I'm an expectant mum for the first time, due in march. Altough i know there is now no way i can now give birth in my home town as even if anyone does pay attention to public opinion it will be closed in march regardless. I'm outraged by this decision.
Firstly the uncertainty now for expectant mothers is an unfair and unnecessary worry at what is already a very emotional time. For some Hemel residents travel to watford is just not viable. What if we don't have transport, are we supposed to pay for a taxi, or jump onto a bus once our waters have broken?
There is the worry of not making it there in time, due to traffic, especially if we were unlucky enough to go into labour on a saturday when watford are playing at home!!! I'm suprised this is even an issue, taking into account the public outrage when hemel maternity ward closed in the first place, then the fact that watford couldn't cope then with the extra amount of babies being born, so then hemel birth centre was opened to take some of the strain away!
If it does close, will the same thing happen again? Also surely it has been proven that the atmosphere of the home from home enviroment that hemel birth centre provides means less complications for the labour and less intervention needed from doctors, so this is beneficial to patients and the nhs.
Have the nhs thought how they would cope if all expectant mothers in hemel decided not to go to watford and all opted for home births? Surely the extra amount of staff they would need recruit and train would eat a large chunk out of the money they might save!! With more and more houses and flats being built in hemel every day and residency levels on the increase surely this decision would have to be reversed eventually anyway, so stop wasting time now, find other ways of making cutbacks and SAVE OUR BIRTHING UNIT!!!!!
Name: Zoe Calvert Address: Longfield Road, Tring Views: I'm expecting my first baby which is due in September this year. I was devastated to learn that the Birth Centre and Hospital is under threat of closure. This needn't be about money this should be about providing the services that West Herts needs. Delivering in a birth centre is one of the optimum choices for healthy and less stressful births for mums to be and newborns, notwithstanding of course the pressure that the closure will exert on existing services elsewhere. I am very upset to hear that this choice is going to be removed from me and I hope that the hospital and Centre continues to be an option for West Herts residents!
Name: Fiona Boughton Address: 11 Larch Avenue Bricket Wood St Albans Views: My third baby is due 16-02-06. My last two were born in 00 & 02 in the old mat dept at Hemel which even without the birthing unit then was still a wonderful experience with the reassurance of knowing the hospital was only round the corner.
We have now moved & are about equal distance between Hemel & Watford but opted to have this baby at Hemel due to excellent reports and facilities now implemented, not to mention no ring road to negotiate during rush hour/football/rugby match times as there are in Watford.
My last labour was so fast so was lucky I did not to have to worry about traffic. I am extremely concerned about getting to Watford in time. I only found out about 4 wks ago by a chance comment to my midwife that the Hemel Birth Centre was closed. Still maybe Mrs Hewitt believes stress and worry are beneficial to mum and baby.
I would love to wring her stupid neck. Apparently, there are plans - don't know how detailed - to build a direct train link from Watfo! rd Jctn to Watford General in about 2012 - so if you have your baby then, all you need to do is jump on a train (if it is running) with all your bags while in labour, probably make a few stops and changes on the way - and bingo! you will be at Watford! Easy!?
Obviously a decision made by the same bunch of prats who have decided it is better to cram as many labouring women as poss into one place. Sorry - just feel very strongly about this issue!!
Name: Nathan Alton Eight Address: Dellcut Road Adeyfield Hemel Hempstead Views: I believe that the plan to close Hemel's birth centre is outrageous and extremely short-sighted.
Name: Bob Morrison Address: Nicholas Way Views: Once upon a time a major connurbation deserved a hospital because it had so many people. Now it seems that if there are too many people the hospital must shut down.
What nonsense! So the Trust faces debts, so should the venture be shut because of the cost? This is not a venture looking for profit, but a public service. It has merely cost more than the authorities wanted to spend but accordingly cannot be judged purely by the meanness of the authorities.
What the Minister and Departmental Civil Servants should do is provide stability over the long term, by properly supported long term strategy, rather than imposing a series of short-term strategy changes that simply waste the money spent on the policies produced for the previous strategy without putting any value into the services.
20 years ago our first child was expected in an atmosphere of uncertainty as to whether we would be forced to Watford. In the event, he decided to take us by surprise in the Midlands. 18+ years ago the staff of the Maternity Unit off Queensway welcomed our second son, fully confident of the unit's future and of its new premises.
17 years ago our third child was born in the unit's new (refurbished) quarters, not as large as hoped perhaps, but well equipped.
15 years ago our fourth child was born at home, as an example of the teamwork, flexibility and availability of experienced mid-wives on-call.
Now all of that heritage is put to one side. Hemel is not prestigious enough to have a front line hospital, the authorities indicate. Even our recent catastrophe at Buncefield seems not to have led them to realise that with maybe 60,000+ people within its area an Emergency care facility is necessary.
Much rhetoric is now to be spent on returning health care to the community ! but that would seem to mean exposing us to giving birth on the streets (on the half-hour journey to the Maternity Unit) or being tended in the back of an ambulance because there is not a berth for you in any reachable hospital (because you had an accident after 30 others, so are just too late for today).
The local doctors and nurses are a marvellous bunch, but they need much better support than this!
They are our real resource and if we lose them, through lack of management support, then any new or refurbished project will fail, wherever our local centre is put.
Name: Lindsey Simpson Address: Hemel Hempstead Views: I am disgusted and astonished by the shortsighted decision to ‘temporarily' close the Hemel Birth Centre (HBC). This decision is not only fundamentally flawed financially, but it risks the lives of women and babies in Hemel and the surrounding area – is this what the NHS is now about?
I gave birth to my daughter at HBC in May. We had the most amazing experience and care.
Caroline and her team are so professional and so dedicated and have a wonderful, holistic environment for low-risk mums.
Incidentally, as we were only in the Birth Centre for 10 hours, and were completely drug free we were a relatively cheap birth too. This is in stark contrast to several of my peers who had horrific and degrading experiences – some at Watford General – because the staff were run ragged and resources were incredibly stretched.
THE FACTS
· Birth Centres are cheaper to run than consultant units which are only sensible when their use is confined to the high risk population who need them.
· Birth Centres provide home from home care and a lower need for, and risk of, intervention.
· Intervention costs more and often brings with it distress and repercussions that mean greater long term cost to the NHS.
· Natural births generally mean quicker recovery and less burden on the NHS, plus happier, healthier mums, babies and families.
The HBC is underused because it is under promoted – that is the simple truth. Please stop this madness and reopen the birth centre now and provide the midwives with the support they desperately need. This not only makes FINANCIAL SENSE but HUMANITARIAN SENSE too. This has gone too far already. Please ACT now and save this fantastic facility which the community so desperately needs.
Name: Edie Glatter Address: Gravel Lane Hemel Hempstead Views: I very much support your campaign. I believe we should not only have our birthing centre kept open but that a full maternity unit dealing with all births should be available at Hemel Hempstead Hospital. I would very much doubt the savings the Trust predicts are accurate as they will still be employing the midwives and staff are the biggest cost in the NHS. I thank the wonderful midwives who have worked so hard to give mothers the experience they should have with a birth. It is shameful that once again Hemel is losing services and to lose an award winning birth centre is a national disgrace.
Name: nicola hawes Address: herbert st hemel hempstead herts Views: I am expecting my first baby 16.2.06 and am very disapointed to have my choice removed by the fact that Hemel has been shut, Hemel is a growing town with lots of new housing being built (as well as having been built). This is going to mean more babies being born in the area and Watford is not big enough to cope or easily enough to get to and almost impossible to get to on football and rugby match days. There is no room for expansion and with all plans that seem to point to A & E also beening moved to Watford the roads nor the hospital will be able to cope. I feel it is going to cost more in ambulance service and midwives at home deliveries because people are no longer able to use hemel!
Name: Sally Mason Address: Bingham Close Hemel Hempstead Herts Views: Given the fact that Hemel is a fast growing town and that more & more homes are being built, how can they justify shutting down any part of the hospital? Taking into account that Watford General is right next door to the football ground, any mother in the midst of labour does not want to be stuck in traffic whilst giving birth. Having had 3 children at Hemel hospitals (St Pauls as well as West Herts)I found the care extremely good, family and friends were near enough to visit, even if they didn't drive, putting people in Watford is going to put a strain on not only the patient but the visitors, a very bad idea!
Name: Lisa Address: Hemel Hempstead Views: In September 2006 hopefully I will be starting a course in midwifery at Hertfordshire university. To hear this news that my local birthing unit may be closing is beyond belief. I hoped to be able to work in Hemel when I am qualified, but it seems now I will need to work elsewhere. This will no doubt cause major disruption to mothers, babies, fathers and midwives loacted in Hemel. I think it's unreasonable to ask a woman in labour to travel a larger distance than she needs to, to be able to have her baby. Surely the birth of a baby, the most important time in its life and probably its' parents' lives too, should have priority? Why does the birthing unit need to close? Surely cut-backs can be made in other areas? Are we putting a price on life?
Name: Anita Keen Address: Nightingale Walk Hemel Hempstead Views: I can't understand or see the logic in closing down an award winning birth centre. I moved to Hemel in 2004 and had intentions to stay in the area with my husband and have children in the next few years. However, if there is no birth centre or local facility I will most definitely consider moving out of Hemel. I don't know the facts, but why does it always feel like this government is always taking away things that are rightly ours? It seems so much of our hard earned money goes to regenerating the North and inner-city London boroughs and only for our quality of life to suffer - our local services always seem to be the first to be attacked and I'm scared that all our emergency and other services will one day be gone. They probably want to get rid of the birth centre so that they can sell the land to a big corporation or build more housing - GREAT!!
TRACY CHADWICK Address: WROXHAM AVENUE HEMEL HEMPSTEAD Views: I myself gave birth at Hemel Hospital and feel that it is a disgrace that a town the size of Hemel Hempstead would not have a birthing unit of some kind. As an expectant mother, you need to know you have medical facilities available on your doorstep. The town is expanding with new housing going up all the time and the new Apsley Lock site and Riverside Shopping Centre attracting more people to the town. It would be a worrying day if the unit shut down.
Name: Jackie Brooks Address: st albans hill hemel hempstead herts Views: This unit is fantastic. Giving birth can be a very anxious and difficult time, this unit and its staff contribute hugely in allaying these problems. The environment is perfect for a relaxed and enyoyable and very personal, emotional experience. The community should not be without this valuable and worthwhile unit. My fist baby was born april 2000 at the origional maternity unit, the second in jan 2002 born there also, the third and fourth born may 2003 and october 2005 were born at the birthing unit. Hemel hempstead needs this facility to promote confidence for future mums to be.
Name: A mum Views: When i was expecting my first child the birthing centre at Hemel had not opened so I gave birth at Watford. Without going into too many details, this was not an experience I would wish to repeat. I am now pregnant again and was looking forward to delivering this baby at Hemel, especially after so many wonderful things about the unit from friends who have given birth there. Unfortunately this does not now seem possible and my husband & I have the dilemma of deciding where to go - I definitely do not want to go to Watford so I feel my options are very limited. Why will the powers that be not wake up and listen to what the people of this area want? Surely that is what we pay for through our extortionate taxes? Forcing more & more people to Watford hospital will simply make the service that is already in crisis, collapse.
Name: Iain and Shelly Address: Gadebridge Road Views: As we are expecting our first child we where looking foward to our baby being born in Hemel Hempstead. We had heard very good stories about the birth unit in Hemel hospital and have met some mothers who have given the unit a very good appraisal.
It saddens us to hear of this closure as we and other expectant mothers now have to travel to Watford. Watford means we will be rushed, we will be kicked out within a few hours of the birth, no time for Shelly to rest and to bond with her baby, we have to make way for the next mother because there is overcrowding due to the birth unit at Hemel closing. Ship em in and ship em out!! Its a conveyor belt.
At Hemel you had time to rest in comfortable home from home surroundings with no pressure.
To me that sounds like the ideal way to give birth and bond with your baby and to be looked after by an excellent midwifery team. No pressure, no being kicked out the door.
That precious time after birth is so important for mother and child and for that reason alone I ask you not to take it away.

Take away the birthing unit and you might as well put another nail in the Hemel Hmpstead coffin. My three children (now grown up) were all born at St Paul's Hospital. I remember well how pleased we all were when the new maternity unit opened. My argument is that it is totally unacceptable for a town the size of Hemel Hempstead to be without maternity services. Patricia Hewitt talks about offering an 'improved service for all'. This is absolute rubbish! How can travelling 8 miles or so through the traffic as it is now be an improvement?

NOW THAT CONFINED MOTHERS HAVE SUCH A SHORT STAY AFTER THE BIRTH OF THEIR BABIES, IT MAKES MORE SENSE TO HAVE A FACILITY CLOSE TO HOME. BELIEVE IT, OR NOT, SOME FAMILIES DO NOT HAVE THEIR OWN TRANSPORT AND COULD NOT BE EXPECTED TO USE PUBLIC TRANSPORT TO AND FROM A HOSPITAL OUTSIDE OF DACORUM AND WOULD BE FORCED INTO USING EITHER THE AMBULANCE SERVICE, OR TAXIS.
Name: Robert Fisher Address: Fairway Hemel Hempstead Herts Views: Recent events have already proved that Watford is unable to cope.
Name: Emma Varley Address: Tylers Green, High Wycombe Views: I am currently 24 weeks pregnant with our first child and had chosen to give birth at Hemel Birth Centre as we preferred the midwife-led, home-from-home service they provide, as opposed to the much more clinical hospital environment.
I am also keen to have a water birth, if possible. After reading so many great reviews about Hemel and it then being awarded the NCT Better Birth Environment 2005, our mind was made up.
Wycombe Hospital is obviously nearer for us, and was our second choice. However, it has no pool, and anyway, at the beginning of this week we found out that Bucks NHS Trust are planning to move maternity services and the special baby care unit to Stoke Mandeville and close Wycombe's in another cost-cutting exercise!
So, looks like I have no choice as to where I have my baby - it'll be a 20 minute drive (minimum) to give birth at Stoke Mandeville, which will no doubt be absolutely packed out.
I'm worried that I won't be given for time for my labour to pr! ogress naturally, but coerced into have an intervention or a C-section just so I free up a bed more quickly! And then there's the worry about what if I go into labour during the rush hour? The journey time would easily be doubled.
As if becoming a mum for the first time was already a worrying enough time!
Name: Caroline Duncombe Address: Dellfield Avenue Berkhamsted Views: I work at the Birth Centre and have not looked after any woman who has been unhappy with the care given there. It truly offers a home from home serviceand supports the Governments plans for delivery of maternity care for women with uncomplicated pregnancies. I am afraid that the women of Dacorum will loose a valuable service and that their choice of place for birth is significantly reduced again.
Name: Gill Mullins Hemel Hempstead Views: If the West Herts Hospital Trust is already £29million in debt already surely an award winning unit like our Birthing Trust costing a mere £445,000 wouldn't make a dent in that sum? An interesting thing my doctor told me recently is that our Hospital Trust owned land where the current BP House is on Breakspear Way. The plan was to build us a hospital on that level land. The plan was vetoed when Zena Bullmore said it would be no good there because it was so close to the Buncefield Oil Depot. In the recent blast no damage was sustained by BP House. This ideal site was sold to BP. Is there anyone else in Hemel Hempstead that know any more about this. I would be interested to hear.
