BARBER DIES IN CRASH

A TRING barber was killed and his friend was seriously injured after they were hit by a petrol tanker at the side of the A41 bypass.
The accident occurred when the lorry collided with the pair’s vehicles which had pulled up by the side of the road near to the Crow’s Nest exit at Aston Clinton.
Friends and colleagues of Nunzio Maiorana, who worked at KS The Barber in Western Road paid tribute to him saying he was ‘a lovely man who would always stop to say hello’.
Emergency services raced to the scene and airlifted Mr Maiorana, aged 37, to Stoke Mandeville hospital but he died later that day of his injuries.
Mr Maiorana’s manager, Kelly Sear, said she was shocked to hear the news of his death.
She said: "He was a lovely, lovely man and we’ll all miss him.
"He was a very good barber and we had a really good laugh with him. It’s going to leave a void here at the shop. He had so much going for him."
Kelly added that Mr Maiorana had only just returned from Italy and had recently produced a book of poetry.
Another friend, who did not wish to be named, said she still could not believe he had gone.
She said: "I got to know him when he worked in a restaurant in Aylesbury. He was a really, really nice guy and he was always up for a chat.
"It was such a shock to hear about the accident.
"Every time I saw him he’d always say hello. I can’t get my head around the fact that he’s gone and I’m not going to see him any more."
Police believe that Mr Maiorana, who was from Aylesbury, and his friend, who was from Tring, were travelling separately in a White Audi 80 and a Red Fiat Stilo respectively, when they pulled over to refuel one of their cars.
The pair were standing next to their vehicles on a grass verge on the Aylesbury-bound carriageway when the tanker struck just before 9.30am on Friday.
A Thames Valley Police spokesman said: "For reasons not yet known the petrol tanker left the carriageway and collided with the men and their cars."
The A41 was closed while an air ambulance took Mr Maiorana to Stoke Mandeville Hospital.
The other injured man, who has not been named, is still in hospital with serious leg injuries.
No one else was injured in the accident.
The accident is the third fatality on that stretch of the A41 since it was constructed.
The most recent death occurred in February this year when cyclist Callum Macintyre, aged 55, was knocked down by a lorry.
An investigation is underway into why the Leyland Daf artic tanker lost control last Friday morning and the driver of the vehicle, a man from Bedfordshire, has been arrested and released on police bail pending further enquiries.
Anyone with information about the accident is urged to contact PC Andy Pierce via the Thames Valley Police Enquiry Centre on 0845 505 505.
Alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Disconnect

PLANS for a controversial mobile phone mast in Tring have been shelved after council officials decided the proposals would ‘fail to conserve the natural beauty of the area’.
The 20-metre mast, including three antenna and six equipment cabinets, was proposed to be built on land at Hastoe Hill by telecommunications firm Orange.

Back to his roots

Antiques guru John Bly, above, went back to his Tring roots on Saturday to sign copies of his new book John Bly’s Antiques Masterclass at Corbett’s Bookshop.
The Antiques Roadshow star still has a home in Tring. His
father Frank ran an antiques shop in the High Street and the family business is still in the town. Shop manager Pam King said nearly £1,000 worth of books were sold.

Drink driver's last chance

A TRING MAN sentenced for drink drive offences has been warned by a judge that he faces prison if he fails to comply with orders made in court at Hemel Hempstead on Monday.
Judge Michael Steen banned France Lewis Francois of Aldbury Gardens,Tring, from driving for five years and imposed three prison sentences of five months each, suspended for two years. The concurrent sentences relate to driving while over the legal limit in Berkhamsted High Street on December 10, 2004, and in Tring High Street on July 24, and for failing to provide a breath specimen.
The transit van he had been driving in Berkhamsted was overcrowded and there were passengers without seatbelts.
On both occasions the defendant had been stopped by police, at 11.10 pm in Berkhamsted and at 2am in Tring, with 86 microgrammes and 136 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath respectively. The legal limit is 35.
At the Tring incident Francois refused to take a test when police spoke to him in the car park, saying he was not the driver. Another man who had been in the vehicle had run off.
Francois had failed to answer bail conditions to attend court on July 29 in respect of the December 10 and July 24 offences and at first denied the offences, but later changed his mind and pleaded guilty.
Judge Steen told 38-year-old Francois there was ample justification to send him to prison, were it not for his state of health, the fact that he was getting on top of his drink problem and there were debts to settle.
“Innocent people are put at risk because you decide to drive when you have been drinking,” Francois was told by the judge, also expressing his concern about money being spent on vodka while fines were unpaid. The defendant could come before a fines court with the possibility of being sent to prison, he warned.
The judge also imposed a 6pm-6am curfew, six days a week, for three months. His licence was endorsed and there were no fines or costs.

Merging police forces is 'good' for Tring

TRING Town Council has suggested that a merging of Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire police forces would best suit Tring’s needs whilst complying with laid-down criteria.
Numerically, a merger with Essex could be satisfactory for one part of the county, but a merger with Bedfordshire could be better from Tring’s point of view - however, this could lead to higher crime costs, suggested Councillor Denise Rance at the meeting of Tring Town Council on Monday.
Because the restructuring rules forbid the crossing of regional boundaries
or amalgamation of forces, joining with Thames Valley could not be considered and voting for “no change” was also not an option.
The council therefore agreed to suggest the three-force merger, which it understood was an acceptable solution under the reorganisation rules.

Pub hours extension opposed by council

PROPOSED extra opening hours on Bank Holiday Mondays at The Anchor Public House in Western Road, Tring have been opposed by Tring Town Council, bearing in mind that Tuesday is a working day.
The suggestion is part of an application which has been lodged seeking a licence for live music from 8pm to 11pm Friday, Saturday, and from 6pm to 1am on Bank Holidays.
They ask also for sale of alcohol from 11am to 11pm Mondays to Thursdays and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays and midday to 11pm on Sundays with dancing commencing at 6pm, with a 30 minute winding down period.

Council stays firm over application

AMENDED plans for Tring’s Rose & Crown Hotel have again been rejected by Tring Town Council.
At a meeting  on Monday councillors agreed there was little change in the new plan and repeated their previous objections.
The main problem - access - they felt could not be overcome without some demolition of the building or others nearby.
They repeated their concerns about over-development of the site.
