ON THE TRAIL
THE creation of the Apsley Paper Trail over the next few years is set to put Hemel Hempstead on the UK and world map for tourist attractions.
The aim is to create a centre of interest and information on paper that is more than just a heritage centre - it will focus on paper and its uses past, present and future.
The Trail will also focus very much on education.
Hemel Hempstead became the home of British paper making at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries and it was here that the industrial revolution for the paper industry took place.
After several years of evolution the trail began to take shape after the closure of the John Dickinson Mills in Aplsey in 1999.
The Trail acquired part of the site, including the Cottage, part of which was the mill manager”s house from the early 19th century.
It's here that the Trail has its base, with another of the mill buildings.
A team of volunteers has been working for over a year on gathering a cataloguing some of the historical artefacts and photos of the story of papermaking.
