WATER GARDENS

WORK ON THE GARDENS EARLIER THIS YEAR

The Water Gardens are the most significant horticultural feature in Hemel Hempstead. They were designed by the famous architect Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe (1900-1996) in 1957, with the construction of the gardens completed in 1961.

Conceived as part of the New Town scheme, the 14,300 square metre park is a Hemel Hempstead landmark and a favourite haunt in the summer months - for people, ducks and Canada geese alike.
The Council's Landscape & Recreation Unit have recently carried out a comprehensive survey and a review of the condition of the Gardens to identify problems and make plans for restoration. Gardens are dynamic and changing environments that require regular refurbishment to maintain their interesting features.

THE DUCKS AND GEESE IN THE WATER GARDENS ARE MUCH LOVED....AND FED!
The refurbishment or restoration process also needs to be flexible enough to allow future change and transformation without seriously compromising the results achieved. Taking these issues into account, it was decided to completely replant a small area in the northern section of the Gardens. The area near the water edge was replanted with herbaceous perennials that are colourful and more suited to this location. Other areas were replanted with interesting shrubs that provide colour, texture and fragrance throughout the year. They also meet the Council's requirements for low maintenance and Bio-Diversity.

When necessary funds become available, the Council is planning to seek agreement to restore the Gardens completely. This will include the repair and maintenance of footpaths and bridges, replanting of the rest of the Gardens and stabilisation of the riverbank eroded by the flow of water.

For more information about the restoration of the Water Gardens please contact Claire Covington, Parks & Open Spaces Manager on telephone number 01442 228788.
