12 ROYAL VISITORS
1982 and Princess Michael of Kent chats to Roy Burnell of Dickinson at the opening of the DRG stationery complex
THE Dickinson mills have had their share of royal visitors over the years.
In the summer of 1926, after laying the foundation stone of the Marnham Maternity Ward at West Herts Hospital, the Prince of Wales went to Salmon Meadow to inspect ex-servicemen, many of them from Dickinson’s.
He also met the directors of John Dickinson and those of the British Paper Company and G. B. Kent and Sons, the brushmakers still based in Apsley today.
In 1982, Princess Michael of Kent opened the DRG Stationery complex at Apsley, an occasion which represented the culmination of 18 months reorganisation and the relocating of seven different sites into one.

Dickinson’s - or DRG as it was then - also played a part in the introduction of Postman Pat into the hearts of youngsters and the royal visitor linked up with the children’s favourite on her visit to Apsley.
