10 FIRE BRIGADE

The 1929 Dickinson brigade with their trophies
THE John Dickinson mills have had their own fire brigade since well back in to the 19th century.

The brigade had a long and proud history of service, not just to the company, but particularly in earlier times to the local community.

In the latter years of the last century they had some of the most up to date equipment and were called to help at fires as far away as Berkhamsted.

They helped with duties in both world wars and our picture, above, shows the House of Dickinson brigade in 1929 with the trophies they won in various local and national competitions that year.

Making petrol tanks during the war
The brigade would, no doubt, have been somewhat alarmed to learn that Dickinson’s were making paper petrol tanks during the Second World War.

However, these disposable tanks extended the range for planes over enemy territory.
