4 Nash Mills
A 19th century view of Nash Mills
NASH Mills, pictured, had already been converted from a corn mill when Dickinson bought it in 1811 and he found moulds for making paper by hand which dated back to 1797.
In 1813 a major part of the mill was destroyed by fire and Dickinson’s house was only saved by hanging wet paper felts on the walls and roof.
Damage done to the mill was put at £8,000, but it was rebuilt and in 1830 Dickinson installed his machine for making fine plate and Duplex papers.
In 1879 the mill was almost completely rebuilt with turbines replacing the old waterwheels and in 1888 electricity was used for the first time ever to drive one of the machines.
At the turn of the century the mill housed the smiths’, carpenters’, and fitters shops’ in which the machinery for all three mills was made and repaired.
Nash Mills was also the headquarters of the mills’ fire brigade which was first set up in 1883.
The Mill, now owned by Sappi, still plays an important part in the local economy. Here former mayor Councillor Maureen Flint is seen on a tour
Nash Mills was not developed much during the early part of the 20th century, but in the 1920s new stores for raw materials, waste paper and wood pulp were built on the opposite side of the mill.
Of the three mills in Dacorum it is Nash Mills that is set to go on booming into the new Millennium.
In the sale of DRG Nash Mills was aquired by Sappi and is now in the words of a company spokesman “a thriving part of the local economy.”
It produces a range of products including the well known Croxley range of watermarked business papers.
