I have quite a few memories of Coombrook school about 1940 I was onlt there a while, does anyone remember me. I remember my friend was Elizabeth (Smith) I think and her mother owned a hotel in London also a girl named Patsy. Memories are vague as to names. We had stilts to walk on in the garden, and we had to eat artichokes that to this day I can not eat.One big classroom where all learned together.Copy books etc.

Lance Warrington has emailed Hemeltoday's Old School Memories section with this request.

It was my unhappy lot to be a reluctant pupil of Corner Hall Boys School from 1955-9, I can't find it in myself to hold any affection whatsoever for that grim establishment.
There is, however, one souvenir of that awful place that I would dearly like to own and that is the punishment book. It was bound in green and was kept in a drawer of the bookcase on the right as one entered the headmaster's study.

The cupboard below housed a selection of canes, the most viscious of which was heavily bound with scotch tape.
My name features many times in the punishment book, firstly in the neat, but unremarkable, work-a-day hand of Mr R(Dick)Barnard and secondly in the more practised, semi copperplate of C.H.E.Church and witnessed throughout by the long serving secretary, Dot Parish.

If you own this book, or know of its whereabouts, I would dearly like to hear from you.

If you know where the book his, contact hemeltoday by clicking below and we'll pass the info on

I used to live in Cotterels before the riverside gardens (Water Gardens) were created. Mr Stansell was the grocer at the end of Marlows.

Update, August 23 2007:

From: Eileen Hicks nee Tompkins

I am now in my 82nd year. I attended school at the Apsley Manor School until 1939 when it was closed and we were transferred to Corner Hall School where I spent the last months of my education.I had perhaps been a bit of a trial to my teachers.

One very special teacher was a Miss Rickard who just about every one in the class fell in love with (boys and girls)

A Miss Luck taught us how to write with joined up letters and I still get complemented on my writing.

Mr Redrup was the Head Master at one time and I attend our Senior Citizens Group here in New Zealand with his uncle Jack who I believe is 95.small world even 13,000 miles away.

I have only had the privilege to return once to England that was in 1979 after being in NZ 23 years and several of my school buddies acknowledged me as if I had never been away.

I would love to hear from any who are e'mail minded. I still call England home after 52 years.

Did you leave Apsley Grammar School in 64-67? An informal reunion is being held on 25th October 2002 in a pub in London. It has been done a few times before and attendances are increasing. Alumni who were at Apsley Grammar between 1959 to 1967 and who left after the sixth form in 65/66/67 will probably meet some old acquaintances. I would particularly like to hear from all and any TOADS out there. You know who you are! More details on the Alumni, Teachers and a host of trivia and drivel about Old Apsley can be found at a href=//:www.frithsden.co.uk/Apsley/apsley.htm
Details of the reunion are there as well.

I'd love to from friends who were at Hemel Hempstead Grammar School (around
mid 1960s) and Bovingdon Primary School. Does any reader know the
whereabouts of Martin Hutton, who used to live in Deaconsfield Road, Hemel
Hempstead and who had a brother Malcolm and a sister Sally; Robin Taylor
(who had a strong American accent!) or Andrew Sinclair (Bovingdon Primary
School) who I think joined the Army.
I know the whereabouts of most of my female friends from that era but the
boys are elusive!
I was Sally Dando, distinctive only by my auburn hair! I became a journalist
(spending some years with the Gazette), and am now writing and enjoying life
in Norfolk.

There are three old schools in Hemel that have not been mentioned.
In Marlowes in the year 1939 I attended a small private school owned by two sisters the Misses Platt. Also I attended the Cambridge Private School in Marlowes . Does anyone remember these schools I would be interested to hear whether there is anyone in Hemel now who attended either of these. I also went to St Johns primary School in Boxmoor which I know was demolished a few years ago.
I am now residing in Australia.

Even Marie Smith, Vicci Black and other elder pupils are invited to reply if they remember the Traceys. I live in Australia, have done so since 1967, but want to get back to "grass roots". I used to attend the Corner Hall Infant/Junior school in Crabtree Lane from 1960-1966. Mr Lawrence was the Headmaster and
Mrs Lawrence, his wife, was my first teacher. The school was demolished I believe in the late 1960's; can you confirm the exact date? I have searched many local photographic history books in the hope of finding a picture of the school without success. Do you have any photos of the old building?
